Military and Commercial
Aviation. Before
I found my true vocation as a teacher and educator, I actually began a career
in aviation at the United States Air Force Academy. After graduating in 1971,
I attended USAF Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) at Vance Air Force Base.
My first assignment was as a C-130 pilot at Pope Air Force Base, NC, and then
two years at Yokota Air Base, Japan. After active duty, I flew the C-130H for
the Oklahoma Air National Guard for four, years during which I “went down in
flames” after buzzing my alma mater at a very low altitude and dropping a
note to them. I guess I’ve always been a free-spririt! |

I left
active duty in 1977 and began commercial flying. My commercial experience
includes Part 135 single pilot operation in a Piper Seneca, 450 hours as a
flight engineer in B-727 and DC-8 for Braniff
Airways, and 2,000 hours as a First Officer on the DC-8 for Capitol Airways
and First Officer on the DC-9 for Continental Airlines |

. A
New Career in Training & Education. About 1988, I embarked on a career change
and became more active in teaching. I have earned a Masters of Public
Administration Degree from North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. in
Education (as distinguished from an Ed.D.) from the
University of Maryland. After
moving to the Washington D.C. area in 1989, I worked as a training consultant
to the FAA and DOD and as a flight simulator instructor for a large regional
airline and several foreign airlines. I have even taught in Spanish. In the
recent past, I have taught FAA exam preparation seminars with a 100% pass
rate. Clients have included private
individuals, Bell Helicopter, Texas Dept. of Public Safety, Delaware Dept. Of
Public Safety, New Jersey Dept. of Public Safety, and contracts with all the
armed forces. |

Professor
of Business,
Management & Statistics. My
first position as a college professor after receiving my PhD was with
Baltimore International College, a culinary arts college. As I like to quip,
it wasn’t aviation, but the food was better! During my career in teaching, I was
a full-time Professor of Business & Management at Baltimore International
College (BIC) and Strayer University, and an
adjunct Professor of Research Methods for Argosy University. I also served as Director of Institutional
Research for BIC, Dean of Institutional Research for Strayer
University, and Director of Institutional Research and Assessment for
American College of Commerce & Technology. During those times I was doing research
into student satisfaction and teaching styles, a topic in which I became
interested during my own doctoral dissertation research into airline pilot
learning and teaching styles. One outcome of my research was the development
of my Student Persistence
Index (SPI). Research
Writing. My current field of
specialty is guiding doctoral candidates through their Doctoral Dissertation
process (visit my website milesflight.com). I have guided over 40 candidates through
completion of their doctoral degrees to include Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy),
D.B.A. (Doctor of Business Administration), and Ed.D.
(Doctor of Education) in fields that include counseling, education, and
business. I have also published a book
“Writing Research: a Handbook for Writing Dissertations and Research
Articles.” (Visit Milesflight.com).
